Rob Astorino rips potential Gov. Cuomo trip to Puerto Rico and Dominican Republican as 'panic and pander tour'

Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino says Gov. Cuomo's potential trip this week to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republican is nothing more than pandering to a Hispanic community he has ignored for four years.

"We heard that Mr. Cuomo was going to schedule a panic-and-pander tour to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, and we just shook our heads," said Astorino. "This governor is completely out of touch with what New York Hispanic communities are saying about him: 'Cuomo nos ha ignorado.' Andrew Cuomo might be better off visiting the Hispanic communities in New York he has ignored for the past four years."

Astorino, who speaks fluent Spanish, noted that Cuomo recently ignored debate offers made by Univision and New York 1 Noticias.

"If Mr. Cuomo really wants to engage in issues important to New York's Hispanic communities rather than just pander at election time, he should debate those issues with me on Univision, New York 1 Noticias, and elsewhere," Mr. Astorino continued. "But that would expose Mr. Cuomo's record and his ignorance."

Cuomo for most of his term did little traveling outside New York. But since August, he's been to Israel and Afghanistan. He is considering a trip this week to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republican. And he has said if reelected, he will travel abroad to places like Italy, China and Israel on trade missions.

COMMUNITIES IN NEW YORK, GOVERNOR CUOMO?'

'Panic and Pander Tour' Can't Make up For Perennial Snub

New York--Oct. 13...Governor Andrew Cuomo has snubbed New York's Hispanic communities for the past four years, and now, with his popularity plummeting 21 days before an election, Mr. Cuomo is announcing a "Panic and Pander Tour" to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republican in an insulting attempt to make him seem engaged in Hispanic affairs, the campaign of New York gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino charged.

Mr. Astorino is known for spending time in Spanish-speaking communities -- he speaks Spanish -- and he won a majority of the Hispanic vote when running for re-election as Westchester County Executive in 2013. Mr. Astorino was endorsed last week by Bronx Democratic State Senator Ruben Diaz and more than 100 Hispanic ministers.

"We heard that Mr. Cuomo was going to schedule a panic-and-pander tour to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, and we just shook our heads," County Executive Astorino said. "This governor is completely out of touch with what New York Hispanic communities are saying about him: 'Cuomo nos ha ignorado.' Andrew Cuomo might be better off visiting the Hispanic communities in New York he has ignored for the past four years."

Mr. Cuomo recently ignored television debate offers made by Univision and New York 1 Noticias, as well as five other TV debate offers. Mr. Astorino has accepted them all. Mr. Cuomo pointedly refuses to debate County Executive Astorino one-on-one on television, which Mr. Astorino calls "undemocratic."
