Clinton raised up to $500K in Puerto Rico visit

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton reportedly brought in between $200,000 and $500,000 for her campaign in a Puerto Rico fundraiser Friday.
 
Clinton attended the 200-person event at the Condado Plaza Hilton in San Juan for approximately 90 minutes, according to CNN.
 
Attendees paid between $1,000 and $2,700 each for seats at Clinton’s fundraiser.


 
The 2016 Democratic front-runner’s brief stop on the island included a visit to a nearby hospital for a roundtable discussion on healthcare.

 
The former secretary of State also weighed in on Puerto Rico’s future political status within the United States during her stay.
 
“It is just hard to justify how you can be an American citizen in Puerto Rico and be treated so different in so many ways,” Clinton told listeners.
 
“This comes down to basic rights,” she added. “Puerto Ricans have the right to form a government of your choice that is representative at all levels of government, just as you have a right to equality as American citizens.”
 
Clinton never explicitly endorsed statehood during her appearance, CNN noted.
 
“[I want to] ensure whatever choice Puerto Rico makes is respected,” she said.
 
Puerto Ricans cannot vote in general presidential elections because of their island’s status as a U.S. territory.
 
They can participate in each party’s presidential primary, however, making it a valuable campaign stop during the nominating process.
 
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) also journeyed to Puerto Rico on Friday but did not cross paths with his Democratic counterpart.
 
The Republican White House hopeful has repeatedly called on the island to vote on the issue of statehood.

Mildred Loving, Who Battled Ban on Mixed-Race Marriage, Dies at 68

Mildred Loving, a black woman whose anger over being banished from Virginia for marrying a white man led to a landmark Supreme Court ruling overturning state miscegenation laws, died on May 2 at her home in Central Point, Va. She was 68. Peggy Fortune, her daughter, said the cause was pneumonia. The Supreme Court ruling, in 1967, struck down the last group of segregation laws to remain on the books — those requiring separation of the races in marriage. 31 states have heightened religious freedom protections

The recent flurry of state bills giving religious exemptions from certain laws -- including the Arizona law that Gov. Jan Brewer (R) just vetoed -- raises a question: How many states already provide heightened protection for the exercise of religion? The answer? Thirty-one, 18 of which passed state laws based on the 1993 federal  Religious Freedom Restoration Act . The protections in an additional 13 states came through court rulings.
